Design Hourly Volume Estimation at Freeway Nodes From Short-Term Traffic Counts

This paper extends the concept of a design hourly volume (DHV) which is derived from “ nth hour” to based on highest saturated hour. To calculate this hour at each ramp junction node, it necessary have permanent traffic counts (PTC) all ramps and main lanes. In practice, such are often not available. For cases, German Highway Capacity Manual proposes method that enables estimation DHV through short-term (STCs) extrapolation results using available PTC in vicinity. study examines how accurately required can be estimated with similar concepts. Furthermore, we investigate what extent number location affect accuracy estimation. Scenarios without also considered. The evaluation database total 72 freeway nodes for data three years (2017–2019) processed. show works accurately, even if only one inflowing approach. further indicate STC crucial achieve accurate when few PTCs Acceptable obtained by week, projection PTC.
